Bheeshma was born as Devavrata, the son of King Shantanu and the river goddess Ganga. His mother, Ganga, had taken a vow to drown all her children at birth, but Devavrata's father, Shantanu, pleaded with her to spare his life. Impressed by Shantanu's devotion, Ganga granted him a boon that their son would possess extraordinary abilities and would be invincible in battle.

Devavrata was trained in various arts, including warfare, politics, and spirituality. He became a great warrior and was admired for his skill and integrity. Due to his exceptional qualities, he was chosen as the heir to the throne. However, Devavrata made a vow of celibacy, sacrificing his right to the kingdom to ensure his father's happiness and to maintain the unity of the kingdom.

Devavrata, now known as Bhishma, was devoted to his family and played a crucial role in the Mahabharata. He became a mentor and guide to the Kuru dynasty and played a significant part in the succession struggle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, two branches of the royal family.

When the Kuru kingdom faced a crisis, Bhishma swore an oath to protect the throne and ensure the well-being of the dynasty. He fought valiantly in the epic Kurukshetra war, leading the Kaurava army. Bhishma was a formidable opponent and was nearly invincible in battle. Even though he fought for the Kauravas, Bhishma's integrity and adherence to dharma (righteousness) were highly respected by both sides.

Bhishma's role in the war was complex. While he fought with great skill and ferocity, he was bound by his vow to protect the throne and his family's interests. He faced a moral dilemma as he witnessed the injustices and immoral actions of the Kauravas, who were his allies. Bhishma's internal struggle between duty and righteousness is a central theme in the Mahabharata.

During the war, Bhishma was eventually felled by Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers and his grand-nephew, on the tenth day. He fell on a bed of arrows, as per his own boon, and continued to live until the war's end due to his control over the time of his death.

Bhishma's character exemplifies loyalty, sacrifice, and adherence to one's principles. He remains one of the most revered and respected figures in Hindu mythology and his story continues to inspire and teach important lessons about duty, morality, and the complexities of human nature.
